Our Boost Your Brain campaign is all about decreasing the risk of dementia. Research shows that simple lifestyle changes could help by up to 45%.

But this isn’t a figure we’ve devised ourselves, or one we use lightly. It comes from the latest international evidence.

Read on to find out more about this surprising statistic!

  • Our campaign is inspired by The Lancet’s 2024 international review. They counted only findings where patterns of evidence and large data sets could be seen. You can read that report here: Dementia prevention, intervention, and care: 2024 report of the Lancet standing Commission – The Lancet
  • The Lancet identified 14 modifiable risk factors that add up to 45%; for example, smoking is understood to increase risk by approximately 5%.
  • Several other factors are currently being studied, which might eventually be added to this list. More research is happening all the time.

We know, sadly, that not all cases of dementia can be avoided. People can do everything ‘right’ and still go on to develop symptoms. So, reducing risk is not about absolute prevention – nor is it about ‘victim blaming’ those who live with dementia. Instead, addressing your lifestyle is about giving yourself the best chance to sustain your brain health as you age.

And with a 45% statistic, we believe it’s worth us all taking small steps to Boost Our Brains.
