What is a dementia friendly business?
A dementia friendly business is a business that is aware of the needs and challenges of people living with dementia and adjusts its products, services, and environment to accommodate them.
A dementia friendly business can benefit from:
- increased customer loyalty
- improved reputation
- enhanced staff morale
Along with knowing that they are doing the best that they can for the residents of Jersey who are living with dementia.
Becoming a dementia friendly business is straightforward, though it may require some adjustments over time to some parts of how a business runs itself. Dementia Jersey will help any organisation that wishes to become more dementia friendly by guiding them through a process that will improve their services for people with dementia and their carers.
Organisations that wish to become dementia friendly will want to –
- Keep the needs of people living with dementia at the centre of becoming a dementia friendly organisation.
- Commit to being more inclusive and aware of the needs of people living with dementia.
- Ensure staff have awareness and understanding of dementia, and strategies for good communication with people who are living with the symptoms of dementia.
- Review the physical environment to ensure it is accessible and appropriate for people living with dementia.
- Review business documentation including forms and publications to ensure they use clear, straightforward language and appropriate design for a person with dementia.
- Plan a review and improvement cycle for being dementia friendly and build it into organisational planning.
Each organisation will take a different approach to implementing these principles and they will be tailored to the individual requirements and circumstances of that business or organisation.
