💜 Volunteer Spotlight: Linda Leech 💜
Linda volunteers at a number of our activities, including SplashChat, Coffee & Connect and Pétanque.
Linda began volunteering around five years ago after retiring from a career in finance. With a personal connection to dementia through both her mother and grandmother, Linda was drawn to support Dementia Jersey – and found the perfect fit with our swimming group!
She says: “At the time I started volunteering, unlike now, there were not so many activities and when I saw that swimming with the clients was one of the activities, I jumped at the chance – I’ve always loved swimming and thought it was a great way to start.”
From splashing and chatting in the pool to sharing coffee and conversations afterwards, Linda’s involvement has grown into a vital part of our volunteer family. Now, as her husband Bob has been diagnosed with dementia, Linda sees our services from both sides – as a volunteer and as someone who benefits from the support we provide.
“The information I’ve learned from other carers and volunteers with lived experience has been invaluable. These activities give families time to chat, share experiences, and feel less alone.”
Linda and all our volunteers - we are so grateful for your continued support and commitment to Dementia Jersey. Thank you for all that you do!

💜 Meet Adrian – one of our incredible volunteers! 💜
Adrian uses the volunteer hours provided by his employer, the Government of Jersey, to support Dementia Jersey at our Meeting Place Project.
He shares:
“I chose Dementia Jersey after my Dad passed away in 2021 from Vascular Dementia. The charity provides invaluable support not only for people living with various forms of dementia but also for their family and carers. I couldn’t think of a better cause to support.
“The most rewarding part of volunteering has been seeing the people coming along to the Meeting Place Project having a good time, and even reconnecting with people they haven`t seen in years.”
“I’ve got a definite feeling of doing something positive for the community. I’d like to think my Dad would be proud.”
We’re so grateful for volunteers like Adrian, who make a real difference. Thank you!

British Summer Time starts this Sunday! Changing the clocks can be confusing for many of us, but it can be particularly disorienting for those living with dementia.
Here are some simple ways to help ease the transition and minimise disruption:
🌙 Start the evening a bit earlier on Saturday - have dinner and go to bed an hour earlier. This helps ensure they get enough sleep and wake up at their usual time on Sunday, with only a slight change to their routine.
🚶♀️ Gentle exercise during the day can promote tiredness in the evening, making it easier for them to go to bed at their usual time. If exercise isn`t an option, keeping them engaged with activities throughout the day can help.
⏰ Having a routine during the day and before bed can help regulate a person’s disrupted body clock. Doing regular activities at the same time each day, for example going for a walk after breakfast, can help a person with dementia make sense of the time.
